I have a sort of on-again, off-again relationship with organization. When we’re on, I’m a whirlwind of color-coding, sorting, and purging. I become an organizational wizard, forming order from the chaos and reshaping messes into well-ordered machines. Behold! Labels! Files! Sorting stations! I am the Queen of Organizing, and the world is my tidied, well-labeled oyster. And then Organization and I decide to see other people. I slip off my queenly throne, and find myself slogging through the piles, the clutter, and the inevitable procrastination that come with them.
Over time, the procrastination piles get so big that I finally have to deal with them. So I roll up my sleeves, blow off the dust, and start sorting. I find a lot of things in the process, not the least of which is myself. Those old piles of papers and unsorted clutter hide artifacts of who I once was, markers of past experiences. At times, they can be unpleasant, but, at other times, they remind me of who I am. Old concept sketches from college days, process notes from an old internship -- bread crumbs leading me back to old dreams and forgotten plans.
Meeting my old self has a funny effect on my present self, making me want to bring those old dreams back to life, or, at the very least, use them power my present aspirations. So the me from the past meets the me in the present, and they work together to build the me of the future. I sort piles and sharpen my vision, file pages and fill myself with dreams. I set out to organize a mess, and I organize my mind for future action. So, what about you? Maybe there’s a pile from your creative past that’s hiding dreams for your creative future. The only way to find it is to start sorting.
