Manifesto 8.3 by Emily Lewin

design Regret is a thief and a liar. His primary objective is to trap us in the past, so caught up in our prior mistakes that we are unable to move forward. Converting failures from lessons to disqualifications, he attempts to blind us to the reality that mistakes are a valuable part of the process, intended to teach us wisdom for the rest of the journey. In our Bright Ideas Book (coming soon!) we describe Regret as a Ringleader, who employs a whole gang of bullies to keep your future, and current, potential from becoming reality. Here's a quick excerpt about Regret from our book:

Next on our list is Ringleader Regret. Regret is a master entertainer whose specializes in filling your mind with reruns of his show, Mistakes of Your Life. In order to keep your full attention, he employs a gang of miscreants named Shoulda, Coulda, and Woulda. These minions are tireless in their search for specific moments that Regret can use to keep you endlessly stuck, consuming your mind with what might have been. Armed with a highlight reel of your worst moments, Ringleader Regret works hard to ensure that you never realize that mistakes are a doorway into growth and failure is an opportunity to change the future in a positive way. The Ringleader has a nemesis named Hope, whose goal is to show you the possibilities that lie on the other side of your shortcomings. Like a breaking news alert, she interrupts the regularly scheduled programming to give you a new way of thinking. Hope destroys the hypnotic power of Regret by replacing his endless reruns with the bright potential of your creative future.

We believe that life is to be lived fully, without regrets, and with all of our senses awakened and engaged. We must allow Hope to interrupt Regret's programming and lift our eyes to see beyond past failures and mistakes. We must begin to live - truly, radiantly, gloriously live - in our present lives, engaging with the world around us and moving toward our bright futures.

If there are any areas that Regret has been allowed to control in your mind, take a few moments to reorient yourself to Hope's perspective. Look for areas where you have learned lessons from failures and where God has brought redemption and healing to places that seemed totally barren. The world desperately needs to receive what you have to offer and your dreams cannot afford to stay bottled up in the past any longer. The present, and the future, are yours for the taking!
