I believe that everyone can be creative at any time, and it is never too late to access all of your creativity. That said, I also be believe that there are certain Moments in our lives that offer significant opportunities for our creativity. These Moments almost always involve major risk on our part, but they also offer huge reward if we take the deal and throw ourselves into them. I believe that I am in one of those Moments right now releasing my new album Spirit Walker and publishing the Bright Ideas Book. Sarah is in her own Moment as well with the Book and her art! Here's a few things I've been learning so far about living out a Moment:
1. Vulnerability is Required
To fully access ALL of the potential this Moment is offering, we are required to be vulnerable. Our creative ideas and projects will never be perfect, and that is ok. We have to be willing to strive for excellence but step out with what we have in our hands when the Moment arrives. Vulnerability is so hard because our creative endeavors are works of the heart and so often the act of creating alone is hugely vulnerable, but we cannot enter a Moment without it. Vulnerability opens door to opportunities because it allows people to see your passion! Vulnerable passion, also known as sincerity, is a magnet that will draw people to you and your work.
2. If You Start The Resources Will Come
Moments typically bring more work that we are able to handle on our own and they force us to ask for help - another aspect of vulnerability! Entering a Moment will allow you to see the strength of your community. I have started to see over and over that people are willing to help someone who is in motion. Opportunities and resources come when you are acting on your dreams, not just thinking or talking about them. People want to help a passionate person pursuing their dream! Step out and watch your tribe begin to form around you.
3. No One is as Sure As They Seem
We're all faking it til we make it to some degree. I know that I'm creative, that God loves when I create, and that He is the biggest supporter of my creativity, but I still have doubts about stepping out in this Moment. When a Moment hits it will stretch you in every way, including your skill level, resources, confidence, and community. This is where listening to Lieutenant Legitimacy becomes vital! In the Bright Ideas Book, we describe the Lieutenant as the antidote to Imposter Inspector (the voice in our heads telling us that we're a fake and going to be found out). The Lieutenant reminds us of who we really are and assures us of the validity of our risk taking. We all have greatness inside of us and sometimes an amazing risk is what it takes for us, and everyone else, to see what we're really made of.
Even though I'm still in the middle of my current Moment right now and it feels crazy, I can confidently say, when a Moment presents itself to you - take the deal! Most people regret missed opportunities in their lives, not risks that they took to see what they could do! We believe in you!
