Creative community is an essential part of living a healthy, productive creative life. A community is a group of people who know us - our dreams, passions, talents, and goals - and can help push us toward those things when we lose focus. If we're short on inspiration, a creative community can provoke us to grow by being around other productive, talented, creative people. A healthy community will be one that encourages your strength and challenges your weaknesses in love. There are many places to find community around the creative expression that you are passionate about. While it's great to be in focused groups, but keep in mind that having a community of diverse expressions and people can be even more beneficial.
Here are a few ideas for where to start finding creative community:
- Get involved in the local scene around your expression. For example, if you're a musician, go to shows for other people, support their art, introduce yourself, collaborate, be an active part.
- Take group classes in your area of interest, many local community centers offer classes at reasonable prices for beginners in any field. This is a great place to start with a focused group of people who are all interested in the same thing as you. You can also do this online with platforms like Skillshare, Udemi, etc - but in order to build community you need to comment (positively) on other people's work and participate in the forums.
- Get a couple friends together and read through the Bright Ideas Book, this is a phenomenal way to grow creatively yourself and meet others who want to do the same.
The best way to have thriving community is to participate. Introduce yourself, give positive feedback, be engaged in what's happening with the other creative people around you and they'll start to engage with you!
